Book Review: Can I Tell You Something? by Holly June Smith
When your favourite spicy VA is your brother’s roommate…
Hannah is spending her Christmas in the Switzerland Alps at her family chalet. This family tradition has been around since her grandma was here. But this year, her brother, Ryan, who is currently living in LA, has made a surprise visit and brought the person Hannah never thought she could have met, Cameron.
He is the one she listens to every night, her favourite spicy voice actor…
My review
I love the setting of this book! Meeting your spicy VA is such a new and niche setting for a holiday rom-com! And of course the spice will be spicing given the setting!
This book is resonating to spicy audio listeners, or just people who listen to audiobooks. I like how there are some chapters that basically look like scripts for those audios. I didn’t read this book in the audiobook version, but I think it will be a nice one to listen to! I personally enjoy a book with a bit more angst, therefore 3 stars overall. I like the setting but the plot is pretty flat and predictable.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT:
Since it is a light and comfy holiday rom-com, there isn’t a lot of character growth but mostly about the plot and the interactions of the characters. I like Hannah and her father’s dynamic. They are both lawyers and it is nice to see such a wonderful father-daughter relationship in a book. Ryan is also a really protective brother, given Hannah’s bad romantic experiences.
It might be a little awkward given that Hannah is Cameron’s fan. They did have a talk about this in the book. I am happy that it is addressed and it doesn’t affect their relationship.
SPICE🔥:
“Those audios aren’t real. They’re stories. I make them up. That’s a fantasy lots of my listeners have, and I like to make content that fulfils those desires, but that’s all it is, a fantasy. Most of those scenarios I’ve talked about have only ever happened in my head.”
Of course the spice is spicing! There’re three spicy scenes in such a short book. Cameron recorded an audio just for Hannah! I like how this book talks about Cameron’s work and his real life. Things that we enjoy in the fictional world does not necessarily reflect our preferences in real life. It is a great point and I really hope people understand that as a lot of people still questions people who reads spicy romances.
Overall: ⭐️⭐️.5/5
Plot: 📖📖/5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5
Conclusion
This book is a short and easy read with low angst. If you want to imagine yourself skiing in the Switzerland Alps and you are also a spicy audio listener, that’s the book for you! I personally prefer a little bit more angst, but sometimes I do appreciate a cozy read. There is also glimpses of Ryan’s romantic interest and I am excited to read See You Next Winter (#2)!
